Question: Somehow Microsoft Outlook, a part of the Microsoft Office 2010 suite, got corrupted. What is the best way to get back to just an installed state. Can you help?

Answer: You can try uninstalling Outlook itself. You also might need to fully uninstall Office 2010. Before you do, make sure you have the CD handy to reinstall it.
The first thing to try is the Inbox Repair tool or Scanpst.exe, which will help fix corrupted Outlook Personal Folder files. It was installed on your computer when you installed Microsoft Outlook 2010. The tool tries to correct any problems by resetting the data file structure and rebuilding the headers for Outlook items. If you are using an Exchange account, the tool does not connect to or analyze the data saved on the Exchange server. You must exit Outlook before running the tool. If Outlook is open, the Personal Folder file will still be in use, and Scanpst.exe won’t be able to touch it.
Open Windows Explorer and select the drive:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE14 folder. Double-click Scanpst.exe, enter the file name you want to scan and the name of the .pst or .ost file that you want to check. You can browse to select the file. Next, specify the scan log options by clicking the option you want, then hit start. If errors are found, you are prompted to start the repair process to fix the errors.
A backup file is created during the repair process. To change the default name or location of this backup file, enter a name in the backup file field or click Browse to select the file that you want to use. Click Repair. After the repair is done, start Outlook. If you have more than one profile, start it with the profile that contains the .pst file that you tried to repair. In the Navigation Pane, click Folder List.
In the Folder List, you might see a folder named Recovered Personal Folders containing default Outlook folders or a Lost and Found folder. The recovered folders are often empty, because this is a rebuilt .pst file. The Lost and Found folder contains the items recovered by the Inbox Repair tool. You can create an Outlook Data File (.pst) and drag the items in the Lost and Found folder into the new data file. When you have finished moving all the items, you can remove the Recovered Personal Folders (.pst) file, including the Lost and Found folder from your profile.
If that doesn’t work, there are a couple of ways to uninstall Office.
Uninstall it from the Control Panel. Click Start, Control Panel, select Programs and then Programs and Features. Look for Outlook or all of the Office products in the list. Select it or them, and then click Uninstall. Repeat if you see multiple Office products in the list. There is a Microsoft FixIt program that will remove all of Office (http://bit.ly/98Ih8P). Just download it, double-click and let it do its magic.
The problem is that if you just uninstall one program Microsoft leaves a bunch of cruft in the Registry. Uninstalling all of Office at once is the best way to remove all the bits and pieces from the Registry.
To that end, you might also like a program called Revo Uninstaller (http://bit.ly/awqbFM). It will help kill all that leftover cruft.
None of this addresses why your Outlook files became corrupted. It could be a virus, it could be a malformed email, it could be a simple glitch. But let’s not borrow trouble unless or until it happens again.
